Ulava charu

Ulava Charu
Ingrediants
Ulavalu / horse gram - 2 cups
Onions - 2 big ones
Coriander leaves - 1 bunch
chopped or grated coconut - 3 tbsp
khas khas/ poppy seeds/ gasalu - 3 tbsp
mustard seeds - 1 tsp
red chilli powder - 2 tsp ( according to taste)
turmeric - 1/2 tsp
coriander powder - 1 tsp
salt - 1 tsp (according to taste)
Method
1. two days before preparing this curry, soak the horse gram in water for 5-6 hours.
2. drain the water, dry it and tie it in a dry cloth tightly and store it in dark warm place for the sprouts to come up (1-2 mm)


3. clean the sprouts with water.
4. cook the sprouts in little water enough to merge the horse gram , in a pressure cooker.
5. chop the onions and coriander leaves.
6. grind the half of the onions, half of the coriander leaves with turmeric, redchilli powder and dhania powder.


7. saute the poppy seeds to light brown and grind it. Add coconut to it and make a paste with little water.
8. heat oil in a vessel and add mustard seeds.
9. After the mustard seeds splutter add the onions and stir them till they turn golden brown .
10. Add the onion paste and boiled horse gram and stir well with little water as needed.
11. Add the coconut and poppy seeds paste to it with salt and cook for 10 more minutes with 1/2 glass water.
12. Add the coriander leaves and cook for 5 more minutes and serve hot with rice.
Its good if you serve little soup on rice and lots of horse gram on side of the rice.
I remember my mom serve this charu with sangti ( dough made of boiled wheat flour or boiled ragi seeds )
